Fickle? Just because I praise the images in panels one and two, while finding fault with those in panels two and four? And when it comes to pleasing the wants of the demographic, Teresa has just shown how she dominates the wall-of-text skill so favored by many established cartoonists.
What needs to be done is abundantly clear. We must round up the slackers and force them to read.It won’t be easy. It won’t be particularly rewarding.it won’t even be interesting. On the other hand, more cute line drawings with wry humorous dialog is probably going to be more effective.Religious, economic or political dialog may be the most effective, but the vapors they outgas can be somewhat toxic, and this area is not zoned for haruspicy.
But you did not mention how lovely is the finely tailored cardigan being worn. When there is fishing for compliments, you should offer at least a bottom feeder. It doesn’t need to be a game fish. Just a recognition of the effort.
It’s a double-edged sword. Dentists are offering “free whitening service” as a come-on for new patients, thus aggravating the cycle. It took decades for the dangers of tanning salons to become widely-appreciated; what happens in 20 years when all these people with porcelain teeth suddenly find themselves with unexpected cases of crack-mouth?
As for the prognostication, I sincerely hope that today’s strip is not a harbinger of the proximate demise of Frog Applause. I don’t know what I’d do without my daily dose of incongruity.
The problem with the opinions that Teresa shouldn’t care what the masses think is that she is in the business where she has to care. If people start leaving in droves then GoComics and anyone else who publishes her (newspapers?) may drop her in favor of a more popular comic.
The adage of “you shouldn’t care what others think” is more appropriate in day to day life not in situations where popularity is the difference between food on your table and standing in a soup kitchen line.
At a listed 31862 subscribers, Frog Applause is still comfortably ahead of many other strips, such as Tank McNamara, albeit well behind Broom-Hilda and far behind the biggest powerhouses. Still the severe, yellow-clad, self-styled “highly-trained haruspex” is not a convincing critic. She hasn’t even recognized that my bathroom porcelain, dating back to the seventies, is beige, quite unlike the fantasies of that East Coast dentist. It’s not just the demographic that is fickle, my dear! Nor do numbers tell the whole story. FA readers are ardent, and smarter than the average bear!
I am hopeful that Frog Applause is going to continue. It was a joy to have it return, and a pit of despair while it was gone. If there is any hope of the blog returning as well…. that would just be…. a wonderful bonus!
In order to save them, first we must gut them. Then, we remove their heads, skeletons and skin. Now we may save them, either by drying or by freezing.Only the frozen fish may be used for deep frying, though. But, when the chips are down, it’s time to fry the fish.
“Auspices” refers specifically to divination by observing the feeding and flight of birds— “Latin auspicium, from auspic-, auspex diviner by birds, from avis bird + specere to look” —merriam-webster.com Before one important battle the divinatory chickens refused to eat any grain so the general threw their cage in the river and said “If they won’t eat perhaps they will drink.” The battle did not go well for the Romans.
The lady in the cardigan still wanted you to notice the fine tailoring and lovely cream color of her sweater. You nearly have to say what a nice piece of clothing it is, even if you do not particularly like sweaters and your smile is entirely fake.
