My brilliant Juggernaut would sit up, shake hands, lie down, and roll over on command. He’d have learned more if not for his too-early death from cancer. To quote his previous owner, “Juggernaut, you’re the most magnificent being I’ve ever known”.
My mom was really good with animals. I was in jr high before I learned that “you can’t train cats.” My mom had always had our cats and dogs well trained. It was just normal. They came when called, the cats never got on the tables, none of the animals begged, and so on.
The earlier cats are trained in life the easier it is. An older cat can be trained as well, but it is more difficult. I had a cat that sat on command, stayed on command, came when called and fetched! Misconceptions of cats are so rampant.

Ain’t that the truth, cats don’t listen to their owners, unless of course it’s feeding time.

You don’t really train a cat. You come to a mutual understanding of how to behave in various situations.

I taught Nimitz to drop the rattle mouse in my hand when he played fetch. It was strictly paws-itive reinforcement.

Cats like Garfield have too much dignity to be trained, compared to dogs like Odie.

And this is why dogs are better. They can be trained and follow orders.

The training procedure with cats is not difficult. They will generally have you trained in a couple of days

My neighbor had a cat which he, and only he, could whistle and it would come and jump in his lap.

I disagree. Step one is “lower your expectations”. Cats can be trained, but not very much.

You can’t train cats but you can train kittens. That is the key.
