Bucky: New book? What is it?
Satchel: Self-help book for dogs.
Bucky: Woof. Must be huge. Lemme see it.
Satchel: I'll just stand here quietly until you need me.
My dog assigned himself to protect the most vulnerable person within his sphere of influence. One time I had to call him away from an infant he was shielding from her drunken, irate mother. He would rest his chin on the foot of whoever he was most wary of. That way he could catch a little nap when things were quiet, but be alerted by the movement of the one he was ‘watching’.Boone seemed to catch my thoughts before I expressed them.Never had such a loyal companion.
Anybody want to guess his breed? (Sorry, Lassie fans, he was not a collie)
My Shar Pei was like that. She protected my young grandson as if he were her own pup. When a dear friend of my daughter came over, my dog was happy to see her, as they were friends. But when the visitor tried to bend over and pick my grandson off the floor, my dog got between them, growled and showed her teeth. When I picked up my grandson and handed him to the visitor, all was well.
Boone chose ME . . . not the other way around. I think that is important. They seem to know stuff we don’t. (I named him after J. Allen Boone who wrote “Kinship with All Life”)
I like this Self Help Book for Dogs, lol… Does that make Satchel dependent on Rob, can’t even have a thought of his own?… I tell ya, some self help book, lol… LOVE Satchel taking it to an extreme… :D…Good thing dogs do generally seem to find a balance…
Just checked on the books (both hardcover; ‘Kinship’ used).the Koehler Method of Guard Dog Training: $30 from Amazon.Kinship with All Life: $24 from Amazon.I have dominated this venue long enough.Thank you and Good Night!
@unnormalI would have guessed German Shepherd because of a like situation I have here. My daughter and son-in-law have a GS. In 2005 they brought home an adopted chinese baby girl. That dog immediately bonded with that baby and also immediately saw me as the biggest threat to her existance. As long as she was out of the house the dog was Ok with me being in there. But if we were both in the house I didn’t dare move a muscle because he would snarl at me. Finally he bit me (more of a nip than a bite I guess). They live next door but I don’t go inside there very often any more……………….
I was going to guess Akita. We had a very sweet cocker mix from the pound, Rexie, who seemed to know exactly what you were thinking and his feelings could be hurt if you treated him too much like a dog. We based Rex in our books, a blue heeler, on him — an overly sensitive cow dog with a warriors heart.
My toy poodle chose me. She was at a local farmers’ market with the shelter owner who’d brought her and several other dogs so they could be seen by shoppers. Lady walked up to me on her hind legs. When I sat down to talk with the shelter owner, she climbed into my lap and went to sleep. Three days later she and a companion (Prince, the ’Chug") joined my household.
Bad Kitty was a medium-hair tuxedo cat. His former owner had declawed him – I’m still trying to find out their names so I can return the favor. He knew when I was sad or discouraged and would come to me and either lie in my lap or next to me on the bed. He WAS a self-help book for humans.
When I first met my Copper at the Humane Society, he trundled right up to me, peed on my purse, then hopped up beside me on the bench and slumped against me. The volunteer at the shelter thought Copper blew it. Nope. I knew that was his way of choosing me. I was in love. He never peed on any of my belongings again. He always peed in the yard like a good boy. I lost him recently. It’s been hard.

My guess would be Malinois or perhaps Alsatian? (German Shepherd in America). But any dog really.

My Shar Pei’s name was Sissy. She was my best friend for almost 14 years before she passed on.

The Art of Heeling
Some dogs get it. Some don’t.Our second sheltie flunked his first obedience course.
He was too busy trying to gather up all the other dogs, mostly sight hounds, into a tidy group.

Did unnormal ever tell us the breed of his dog? I couldn’t find it amongst all the wonderful dog stories.

When we were choosing among 5 or 6 puppies I picked the one who crawled up my arm and went to sleep on it. Have had her 6 years now with no regrets.

Bucky said “woof”!! That may be some kind of breakthrough for him. Albeit there was some sarcasm.
