    phritzg: Could have been worse. Back in my day, the limit was 60 pounds, no vehicle, and I was written up for weighing my load – 75 pounds – all on one shoulder, no tumpline. As a bus driver (our only permitted vehicle) said, “doing nothing but putting a good pack mule out of work.”

    Ice is slippery in great part because there is a thin layer of water on top. As is cools down, more of the water freezes, and the ice becomes less slippery. When the weather is “bitterly cold”, the ice is not as slippery as would be indicated by the cartoon.
