Kate, I’d come to your house as I loved it for dinner. While we had turkey for Thanksgiving I wouldn’t turn it down. With only hubby and I we don’t have turkey any longer and the meat in the stores here are terrible.
Normally, we go out to a restaurant for Thanksgiving, but definitely not this year. We’re roasting Cornish hens, since it’s just the two of us (and a few bites of hen for the cat). Doctor up some stuffing mix with extra seasoning, onions and mushrooms, and a vegetable and dessert yet to be determined. Mysteries on TV afterward.
When my doctor first said that I needed to go on cholesterol meds, I didn’t want to, and so I started eating a very strict cholesterol-managing diet. The diet was so successful that I got my cholesterol down and kept it down for 16 years, but eventually the diet was no longer able to keep my cholesterol down and so I gave up and started taking the meds. At that point I could ease up somewhat on the diet, and the very first meal I fixed was liver with bacon and onions.
As a postscript to my previous post…There was a year that my mother was terminally ill in the hospital and there was a raging blizzard, when, while walking the two miles to the hospital to visit my mom my wife and I split a hot dog and a cup of coffee from a food stand as our Thanksgiving Feast. for about 15 years after that, while we still lived in the city, we would walk to that food stand and get and split a hot dog on Thanksgiving while the rest of the family watched the Macy Parade.
I never quite “got” the jokes about liver and onions. I don’t know if I’d have liked it as a kid, but once I had it as an adult I really enjoyed it (I agree, have the bacon and mushrooms too). It’s no doubt the strong taste that people (including kids) don’t care for. Like lamb and Brussels sprouts, it was one of those things my parents didn’t like so I never had it growing up. Once I had them when out on my own, I realized I enjoyed them all!

My mother made cranberry-orange (whole cranberries and oranges) relish every year and I never did figure out who ate it.

We don’t eat organ meats, but I remember liver and onions from my childhood. It was the first thing I learned to cook on my own. With bacon. MMMMMMM
