For labor day I will be spending the afternoon looking after a friend with dementia so that his family can have an end of summer get together. Several of my coworkers have spouses in various stages of alzheimers and one has lost her husband, who died before he reached retirement age. Todays “comic” is a total slap in the face to all families who have members suffering from this disease.

Dementia is NOT funny! I’ve given lectures on it and shocked people when I say, “I’d rather get cancer than dementia. 1- Medical care has a very good chance of successfully fighting cancer, and 2- At least I’m me.”

My grandma asked me “How long have you had a mustache?” About 25 years I said. “It suits you.” She said. It’s one of my most endearing memories of her.

My grandmother had Alzheimer’s and lived with us, and the only thing that got us through it was humor. It sucks but the humor helped.
