I was born and raised in central New York state, on the edge of what was/is called The Cherry Valley. Route 20 runs through it. The area is known for it orchards of various fruit trees. For many years every autumn, this guy would show up with his station wagon loaded with bags and bushels of apples. Mom would come out and look at his produce but all he had to do was take one of those beautiful apples and give it a twist and it would split in half and then hand it to her. Sold! No wax or oils or what ever they put on fruit, just pure, lovely apples and we did eat them all!
A friend with an apple tree just gave me a bag of apples. (Tried to give me two.) I can’t snack on them all. I need to make a pie. (They are a good variety for that, too.)
Apple picking, especially with children, is a very enjoyable outing, and will, especially if done every year, build a happy tradition, and wonderful memories the children may eventually share with their own children.

Why are apples so huge ? They use to be smaller, enough for a snack. Now one apple is for two people.

Took the grandkids apple picking last year. It was fun but I noticed that the farm charged a lot less for apples that they picked themselves.
