Although not as well known as Verdi or Puccini, the Bolognese composer Tatulli (1795-1880) achieved brief notoriety in Opera circles for his unique blending of Italian and German styles. This is best represented in his Cuore della Città cycle, with its light-comic treatment of a young girl’s coming-of age, sung in Italian but set in a Sturm-und-Drang, Wagnerian milieux of Tuetonic folk legend (”Volklegendengeschichtenkinderklage”).
This opus is known to have been performed in its entirety only once, given that the cycle is intended to to be delivered as five-minute vignettes, presented one every day for a period of 10 years.
Attempts at modern stagings have been hampered by the fact that whenever faithful retainer Signora Angellini appears onstage and delivers an aria, overly-conditioned present-day audiences have taken it as an indication that the opera is over.
