Ok. With this strip, I have now fully caught up on Heart of the City, from the old days to the new; took 3 months. I already shared my thoughts on Mark Tatulli’s run on the last strip before the reboot started, Apr 26, 2020. Now it’s Steenz’s turn. What’s that? No one cares? Very cool.
TLDR – the reboot is fine. It’s not as good as the best Mark’s run had to offer and nowhere near as bad as the worst. I’ll keep reading. I won’t bother giving my opinions on the change in art style; I feel like that’s so subjective that it’s kind of pointless to mention whether I prefer one or the other.
Before getting into the good and bad though, I do have to comment on how ridiculous some of the initial backlash was. I’m not even talking about the reaction to the art. As early as the first week of Steenz’s run, commenters were complaining that the characters and story had drastically changed. Well, speaking as someone who actually went through the entire thing recently, I can say with confidence that those thoughts were pretty disingenous. Nothing in the first 2-3 months of the reboot was a substantial departure to Heart or Dean’s character. Those people were just being uncharitable. Now, however, we’re a year and 2 months in. Let’s go.
