Good for Jamaal. But, just to be a bit cynical, people often grow up in circumstances beyond their control. These have influences too. Often we aren’t even aware of them. My wife and I have totally different attitudes about money. She comes from a household of lower incomes and money was pretty much spent as quickly as it came in (having 7 kids didn’t help either). I grew up in the upper income brackets and manage money to pay bills and save. I also figure money should be working for us, so I keep up with mutual funds and IRAs. Neither of us are spend thrifts nor irresponsible, but her attitude is more short term than mine. It’s totally due to upbringing and she wasn’t aware of her attitudes.
Yes, people are responsible for their actions but often times they aren’t aware of where their decisions and actions originated. If we don’t want stuff to happen again, then you have to deal with that condition. That’s not letting them off the hook, it’s merely trying to get them to a better place.

Personal responsibility? For so many people, Jamaal’s way of thinking is so old-fashioned.

Hooray for Jamaal! Sometimes it seems as if we are responsible for everyone’s behavior but our own.
