My first driver’s license was issued by the State of New York. It was paper, had no pictures and it had a 26 digit number. They could have issued licenses starting with “1” and still not have used up that many numbers.
I do wonder about account numbers that approximate the population of the Galaxy.
Shortly after getting the license, I went into the Air Force. New York State allowed me to keep the license as long as I was on active duty no matter what state I was stationed in. So when I was in a store and needed to cash a check, I was usually asked to provide my driver’s license as ID. Most of the clerks never saw a New York driver’s license and thought I was making it up.
Instead, I offered to use my military ID. Most of them took a look at it and called their managers who usually told them, “Don’t worry about it. Cash the check. You can trust him.”
I left active duty in 1982 and got a 20th century driver’s license from the state where I finally settled.
Reminds me of a fellow who had been a patient in our small hospital and was taken to a large hospital out of state by a medical flight. OK this was a long time ago. He was supposed to have been met by an ambulance, but none showed up, so he hailed a cab and told the driver he needed to get to the hospital right away. The driver took one look at him and they made a speedy trip. He stumbled into the hospital and was met at the front desk by a person who told him me needed to fill out some paperwork and have a seat. He said he leaned over the counter at her and told her he was about to die right there. She was convinced and some aides and a stretcher showed up.

Good job! I’m impressed that he knew his number. However, now he won’t need it anymore.

The numbers on my insurance ID card are so small the entire number would fit on a grain of rice, why Aetna why.
