In grade school and high school, most of our teachers had their unspoken nicknames, as assigned by students. Some were clever, and some rude. I always thought the very unfair names pertained to physical appearance. However, peculiar mannerisms and especially unfairness in student treatment seemed fair game for well-concealed mockery.

Maybe I was lucky, in that I learned to turn off my dislikes for certain teachers and took what was of value in their teaching. Sometimes it wasn’t easy to do that. And to this day, I still remember some teachers with particular disdain.

I remembering “hinting” that my biology teacher (Grade 11) was the missing link. He was very hairy and on the short/wide side, so it was a perfect fit. He was NOT amused. :D

After facing similar comments – or worse – since childhood, it’s a bit too late to show such sensitivity.

But teachers know something that students never seem to get. One day one of my classes and I got to trading jokes on appearance. They said Mr. B, you’re just old, bald, fat and bowlegged [I was 45]

My response — When you go home today, take a look at your oldest relative, the one your family says you most resemble. Remember it. Then one day, you’ll look in the mirror and see you have become that person. And, while you stand in shock, you’ll see my face in the background and remember today. And wherever I am, I’ll be laughing. Got very quiet after that, but only for a few minutes, then we were back at it.

I retired 26 year ago [and glad of it]. Some days, I remind myself that, by this time, many of them have looked in the mirror and heard my laughter. Getting even is awesome.

Well as an American citizen, the constitution says I can be whatever I want to be. Now if you do not believe in the American Constitutional rights….that’s a sad thought.

Many years ago I knew a junior high school physical education teacher whose last name was Linkletter ( no relation to Art ). I wonder if Miss Linkletter ever had the any of kids calling her Missing Link? I somehow doubt it … at least not to her face.

This strip does not look like Herman and is not drawn by Jim Unger. Outside of getting Jim’s blessing (“passing the torch”), it should just stop pretending to be something it’s not. Jim’s gift was not merely a good gag but the drawings were hilarious. Whoever this imposter is that’s drawing now, making everyone with giant noses (not Unger’s style), is failing badly. Just rename the strip and make public the actual artist. Better yet, give us authentic classic Herman here and nothing outside of that.
