Putin wants the Russian Empire back. The “Russian problem” that no one wants to talk about is that Russia, as it is today, is not a country, but the remains of the empire that the Communist revolution inherited and Lenin and his successors have been trying to hold onto (and in some cases expand) ever since. It can only be held together by brute force and the Russians who benefit from having that empire know it. It’s an open question if the rest of the world would benefit if all those conquered lands were given self determination and the empire fell appart.
The same thing is true of China and it’s current leader… not really a country, etc. In both cases, the enemy they are fighting is democracy. Democracy can not hold together an empire; witness the former British Empire.
I’m pretty damn tired of the Russian people, much as I’m pretty damn tired of right-wing populists. Here’s an idea, grow up and lead your country in a responsible manner. The people of Ukraine, those very same persons with whom you claim to have so much in common to the point that your willing to say that your essentially the same, they were pulling themselves together to create a functional nation. Why don’t you A$$hats try it? Jeff, we need a few of your down south in Bama themes applied to the Ruskies.

Maybe not the USSR, but Holy Russia.
Here is a good article that goes into some detail about Putin’s relation to and with the church there and how the history influences him.

Putin is trying to “beat” — i.e., surpass — the dead horse of the USSR.
