Maybe she knows she can’t hold down a job long enough to afford a comfortable, safe home. And maybe she doesn’t want to sponge off people. I would leave her alone. She’s a grown woman and she knows what she wants.

OK, look. There are homeless people who have very real problems and need help. However, at the same time, there are scammers who pretend to be homeless because you can make good, tax-free money begging..This is documented fact not a “lie” or an “urban legend.”. That’s why I never give money to a beggar (unless he’s entertaining). There are far too many legitimate government and charitable resources they can use if they’re in honest need.

While there may be an anecdotal scammer or two, my decades of working with mental health clients has given me enough of a wealth of experience to know that there are almost no wealthy beggars. People usually tell stories like that because it helps keep them from feeling guilty about not giving to these folk, or perhaps because they worry that someday they might be in the same circumstance.
