if there were a German heritage month, what German foods — even Pennsylvania Dutch/Amish foods — would seem offensive?

Food, more than anything else except maybe language, IS culture. And the need for food is universal. If you want people to start learning and relating to another culture there aren’t many more approachable ways to start. Read Claudia Roden, Michael Twitty or Raymond Sokolov. Learn something not only about a dish but where it came from the history and significance of the ingredients. You will learn more about the people than you would from official histories or whatever makes its way into an art museum.

I made guacamole in Spanish class. Had to do the whole presentation in Spanish of course. Went pretty well as I remember. Helped that I brought sufficient chips.

Last time I looked, Salsa was outselling Ketchup by a pretty good percentage

What do you mean English cooking is terrible? I’ve eaten in many fine restaurants in England. Of course, they were all run by Indians, Italians, Pakistanis, Indonesians, Ethiopians, etc., but still …
