Luann: "So you're back at Weenieworld, huh?"
Brad: "Til I find something better"
Luann: "I heard they hired a new manager"
Brad: "Yeah. She just came back from Japan. And get this: Her name's Ann Eiffel"
AHA! Now we get to see Bernice’s reaction! I wonder HOW recently she came back from Japan. Considering the way news seems to travel in a town as small as Pitts apparently is (How many of you hear about it everytime a fast food restaurant in your area gets a new manager?), Ann’s probably heard about the beauty pageant that was hosted at the restaurant she’s currently working at.My prediction: Bernice tries to warn him, but Brad brushes it off.
On a related note, what are the odds that Brad will discover pictures of Beauty Pageant Bernice (complete with awful gown) hanging in Ann’s office? None of the other contestants… just a picture of Bernice… for no apparent reason, at least not one that Evans can delve into in a family friendly strip like Luann. Anybody want to bet?
She doesn’t want the guys; she wants the feeling of power it gives her when they want HER.Ergo, she’s sweet as pie to them when it suits her plan. It’s the girls she wants — but, as she’s closeted and bitter, she toys with them and drives them hard……maybe hoping one will break down and beg. Bernice never did get it — but I’m older and I’ve seen this game.
For those who forgot (via Wikipedia):“When [Eiffel] hired Bernice as an employee, Bernice began working with Zane, one of the supervisors of Borderline. Eiffel became very jealous of their relationship and even threatened to fire them if they continued seeing each other. Bernice initially suspected Eiffel of trying to seduce Zane. Eiffel often interrupted Bernice’s tasks by making Bernice bring her lattes, whether it was to keep her away from Zane, or just to heap pointless busywork on her. For firing Zane, Bernice developed a very rebellious attitude, which led to Eiffel increasing her potential threats, until Borderline CEO Jim Hernandez, who knew Zane very well, arranged to transfer Eiffel to the new bookstore in Tokyo, Japan as a means of retaliation for the treatment of her employees, and for the sexual harassment policies she violated.”LET THE DRAMA BEGIN!
Obviously Bern remembers her. Does she plan to do anything about it? Her warnings to Brad about her nature may be enlightening. Brad may have a different opinion. After all, he is “appreciative”.
Okay, given the way that bookstores are going (I’m sorry, bookstores, but I too have gone to the Amazon dark side), this move to a fast food place is actually a smart one for Ms. Eiffel.
fact that Ann is interested in girls was confirmed by Greg to me by email, than he posted that fact in his blog, she was not making moves on Zane(but Bern though and probably still thinks she did, I think she has no idea that Ann was interested on her)
BTW, her statements “look” predator like because we know her past, but if we looked at her statements without her past in our mind, it was a normal and logical words made by a manager talking JUST work related, we might see tomorrow if Bern still thinks Ann was making moves on Zane
Greg has stated: .“One more interesting aspect of Ann Eiffel as a villain is the fact that she’s a female. To me, this makes her way more menacing and dangerous than Dirk was. Dirk was scary due to his size and volatile behavior. But at least you could see where he was coming from and, with a bit of finesse, could stay out of his way. But a devious, manipulative vixen like Ann has menacing currents that run much deeper and are way harder to detect and avoid.”
I recognized Ann Eiffel, but didn’t immediately remember what the story was with her. So I was trying to search for the previous mention of Ann Eiffel to recall what happened there, but GoComics doesn’t seem to have a good search, only can search by comic name, not by dialog? Aw! Please GoComics- support full text search of dialog!
I don’t know when Ann Eiffel last appeared (Wikipedia says first appearance was January 2002). The GoComics archive of Luann goes back only to March 2003, so I don’t know if her last appearance is available on this site.
Get your facts straight. Zane was not fired. HE got Ann transferred to Japan after being caught by her superior in a misconduct. Zane left Borderland because of Bernice – she proposed. He knew he had to leave so Bernice would have no choice and move on. Have you ever seen employees in a bookstore? They do meet and chat for a bit between doing their duties so what Zane and Bernice did was perfectly normal – Ann just did not like it and found ways to keep them apart. It was all on Ann. It seems to me you like villains, don’t you? Dirk, Tiffany, and now Ann. I have to presume you relate to them.
GoComics technical glitches kept me from posting several hour back, too, Night-Gaunt49. But now I can at least remark that I like Bernice’s classic spit-take, and wonder if she is enough older and wiser now to recognize the predatory threat presented by Ann Eiffel?
Again, I say, most fans are reading too much into this. And if you believe this, there is this bridge I would like to sell you . . . low monthly rates . . .
‘Til I find something better." – Since you have not explored beyond the borders of Pittsville, that could be a very long time. Let’s face it Brad. You are just not a “Be all you can Be” kind of guy. Behind every great man is a woman pushing him to try harder. Toni needs to push again. She hasn’t pushed since she pushed you into not giving up on becoming a fire fighter.
Don’t look for Brad to find a better job far away. Greg needs him (and Toni) there in Pittsville, interacting with his other main characters. He’s not about to have characters this popular with his readership moving out of the strip!
A troll is whoever bashes the commentator AND the characters in the strip. You hate all good guys and adore all the villains and a troll is a villain, so it IS fitting.
NOW I remember … funny I never read an ‘Ann hot for Bernice’ subtext into the strip, but my first reaction on seeing her meet Brad, well, she seemed to be speaking in double entendres. And poor Brad, he’s just a clueless as I was at that age, doesn’t realize what’s about to bite him.

As I thought, this would be about Ann and Bernice, round 2, not about Ann and Brad.

I doubt Brad will fall for any of Eiffel’s Come on’s since he already has a great girlfriend. This will, of course, tick Eiffel off to no ends.

But this is good. Bernie will fill Brad in on “Iron Annie” and maybe let us know what happen to Zane.

What’s wrong Bernice?
doverdan over 13 years ago
Susan may be right. but in my view, Ann is turned on by power over others, particularly the young and attractive ones.
Their gender may not matter.
This would make her an “ambidextrous predator.”
doverdan over 13 years ago
Pittsville is a generic American town, apparently not a suburb of any big city.
It may not be in the extreme NE, since Brad and TJ drove to Las Vegas that time. So it could be in the West, but not specifically in California.
Have they ever gone to the beach? I don’t remember. Luann has had beach dreams.
Miss the old archives.
