Transcript:
Crystal: "Knute? Did you put on the goth gear I picked for you?"
Knute: "Coming, Bella"
Crystal: "Hm. Somehow you turn goth into goof"
Knute: "I know! I feel scary and silly at the same time!"
Crystal’s problem is that she’s trying to match him to her personality. She has to update him according to his personality…that is, she has to figure out how to make goof look good. A trying task for the wisest of fashion designers.
Neither of them much interested in the rest of the world, they are slowly learning about each other. Greg Evans produces great chemistry – perhaps the best I’ve seen in cartoon land.
Lesson, Crystal: Knute is not Goth and you can’t turn him into one because you are one. You only need to look at his personality and know he is not a Goth – he is not an intense personality that Goths are famous for. He is just an easygoing skateboarder. You gotta accept him for who he is or go find a Goth guy.I guess this week strip will be all about Crystal trying to figure how to dress Knute and Saturday will have Knute back in his regular clothes.
Yikes! Knute is more of a problem than either Crystal or I imagined! How about “less is more” and “wipe that silly grin off your face before I do it for you”?
This reminds me of my dating life….some women take men on as Projects .. can’t leave well enough alone. Its ok to encourage us to dress up a little but to change our entire look is just wrong. Better to leave us alone than to make us what we are not then just to dump us or make our lives a living hell. Whew….got that off my chest.
So true..Plus, anyone who cycles (road bike) and wears a bike store bought jersey that has sponsor ads all over it should be shot. Twice..The weekend riders who wear this uniform are the most ridiculous looking tools out there.
I’m sure Greg Evans is referring to the Bella from Twilight, but you’re right Flyingairman, there was also Bellatrix Lestrange played wonderfully by Helena Bonham Carter — the ultimate role model for an aspiring Goth!
first thing I thought of was he looks like a pirate. What is wrong with his slacker look? I don’t much care for it but if it is who he is then so be it.
But You Know, Maybe, Just Maybe, Crystal’s doing this “Make-over” bit because She wants to spend Time with You, since You hardly ever seem to ask Her out.
In FACT, None of the So-Called “Good Guys” in this strip seem have any Gumption for asking the Ladies out at all.
Crystal is trying to re-make Knute into something that she wants, and it can’t be done. You cannot – no matter how you try, you CANNOT – change people into what you want them to be. You have to take people as they are. Crystal does not understand that.
The problem Crystal has is that their school doesn’t seem to have any other Goth kids, and her best friend Tiffany is so into her own style that there’s no chance she’d want to change. So Crystal has to try to make over someone else into it so she’ll have a friend she can really share with. It can be very lonely when none of your friends understand your style/worldview.
Hope Mr. Evans has enough outfits in his repetoire to give us TWO weeks of silly laughs. Here are some ideas:- Knute goes Goth – Knute goes Liberace – Knute goes professor (tweed jacket with elbow patches) – Knute goes hoody (with sagging pants that get him kicked out of school) – Knute goes beach boy (most appropriate)There are five ideas. Anybody got five more?
Love the comments today. They are just as funny (or better) than the strip. I read the comments every day, but today was the first time I felt the need to jump into the conversation.
Dave53 – to answer yesterday’s question — just a random kawinky dink that Knute’s boxers are close to Crystal’s eyeshadow (in color). Was going to say close to her lips, but that would spark a new thread.
I love Knute. Not quite in Gunther’s intellectual class, but cheerful, totally free of teenage angst, no vanity, not a lot of self-deception, and he wants to be a cartoonist.
Fully agreed that Knute seems happy go lucky and puts the kibosh on Goth. However, he does have a little dark spot – his obsessive cleaning of bathrooms. Something a tiny bit off there.
I don’t know Goth, but that looks ridiculous. Doesn’t anyone realize that that’s a girl’s Goth outfit? The outerwear looks like what Crystal would wear, and the platform shoes give it away.

Actually first thing I thought when I saw him was, “Boy Robin must be pissed for jacking his look and then ruining it.”
Careful knute Batman may be coming to deal with you.
whayle over 12 years ago
It is one thing to try to get him to dress a little less “slacker”. But this is trying to turn him into something he is not.

yeah, its ridiculous she would chose so many contrasting colours for a Goth look. Greg, you may want to do some research on the style itself.

Knute, simply is a slacker.. He does not have the dark eerie thing to pull off a goth look.

Today, it has been established that Knute is incapable of developing away from being a one-dimensional character.
JimT8 over 12 years ago
Sometimes clothes don’t make the person. A happy go luck Goth does not compute.
Happy go lucky is exactly what Knute is.

I thought Goth was all-black, like Crystal’s outfit—not with accents of red, green and yellow!

Knute and Crystal are a great couple. Knute doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. They could very well become the parents of the future Lady Gaga.
