I didn’t want to say this yesterdy and believe me I’m so glad I was wrong. After yesterday’s strip I had this feeling that the only thing that would be available would be “Wienie World” and the possibility of reuniting us with Ann Eiful (who now works there on the line instead of as a manager which could set up some revenge plots)

What are the odds Shannon will be a student at that school?^Well, calculating the relative size of Pitts, factoring in the actual, mean population, then the projected population growth figures, and assuming this is California, the Per Capita per person of State, and unless Pitts is an independent city, the county’s PC (but of course Ind. Cities are treated as an individual county, too…) and finally Pitts’ PC, then the tax revenue, then the local budget with surplus and deficit, throw in a couple of numbers because they look shiny, add a dash of pepper, bake for about, I’d say… 350 for 20 min., carry the four….. – Well, by my calculations, it’s be good! JK! No, really, I’d say that from our standpoint as readers, it’d make a lot of sense, but the one factor that we can’t calculate, would be what direction Greg and his “brainstorm team” (his daughter and wife) ultimately decide…..

Actually, Bernice, all you did was search an on-line job listing for about 30 seconds. That’s not exactly rocket science. In fact, Luann could have done it herself without even consulting you, and the fact that she didn’t leads one to wonder just how successful Luann will actually be once she enters the real-world labor force. Better pick up a job application at Weenie World on the way home just in case, is what I’m saying.

As long as it’s not another Stuart! Of course, she probably knows now how to be more aware of that situation… – When I stated during the camp that it could be a time for Lu and Quill to go through a “rocky period”, I thought about the possibility of her meeting someone… perhaps this could be a time where if she’d find herself attracted to a teacher or staff member there, that she’d end up developing feelings for someone new, and having to deal with the crossroads of her and Quill, and the “new person”…

Bernice is ecstatic because she actually helped someone — which is why she wants to be a counselor in the first place. Offering career and academic advice is all well and good, but that is somewhat esoteric and intangible. Here she is providing concrete help somebody. It justifies her career choice.

    I’d be excited, too.

At first I thought it a bit unrealistic that Bernice hit pay dirt on the first try. Then I recalled that when I was working for Florida State Employment Service in Clearwater and got laid off after Pres. Reagan was elected, I finally thought to visit the F. S. E. S. in St. Petersburg, the city where I lived (but a former colleague was there), and bingo! – she found my life’s work on the first try, with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. (Agency names have since undergone a couple of name changes.)

Bernice may not have believed she failed with the freshmen, but she has no way of knowing if she succeded. ^That’s true , but the statement can be also true that she has no way of knowing that she failed , either. We may not be given a specific result for each case. It may not even be necessary. It may just well be up to each of us to fill in the details. The important thing is that when she had each session, whether or not she could gage their reaction. These things weren’t documented all the way through, only what was shown in the strip. From these, it’s back to a chance of either happening. If it’s going to be left up to our minds to chew on, I again would like to think that it wasn’t so bad, and that Lu’s was a continuation of her success…… – To also use a video game vernacular to compare how she may feel, this situation for her could have been like a “mini-boss”, since she has just started in the GC “game” ….

What I am curious about, is if the library she worked for earlier does not have the funds to pay her, how is it Lincoln Elementary does have the money.^Scenario 1: It could be that the funds were sought after and approved before, and when cutbacks happened, this school’s funding was able to survive, in comparison with a much larger funding need as a library. In turn, if the library had cutbacks, perhaps they had to decide between dedicated, full time staff and temps and part-timers. Or whatever decision the library was forced to make. – Scenario 2: The Pitts School Board/System is independent of the larger Township/Municipality/County area budgets, so it would not be affected by the library’s cutbacks…

The key phrase is “after-school programs assistant”. As an assistant, her library experience should be adequately qualify her for the job. Also, there is a real need to provide supervision for students who would otherwise return to an empty home where both parents are still at work. Community employers are more willing to fund these programs than they are to fund library assistants.

Alternatively, companies can simply promote from within.^Yes, you are correct! And they also use, along with he “internal promotion” process, the thing that I was describing above, ideally to get new “entry level” people in, and move up the internals… but of course, it varies with each public/private entity…. – But the main thing I was stating this for, was as a way to show how Bernice could have possibly been able to find a lead for Luann, through an inter-school database.

Many schools offer before and after school care. It can be paid for by charging the parents a fee. (The care givers aren’t the teachers, so there is no conflict of interest,) Too many parents go to work before school starts, and don’t come home again until late. The parents are frequently glad to pay rather than hire someone to get them to school, pick them up afterwards, and have them unsupervised until 6 or 7. The children are in a familiar environment, with facilities that can be used for homework, physical, and creative activities.

Jokingly, I offered to “refurbish” the unit and sell it back to them, but if they don’t use up their entire budget, then the next year, it might be cut. Typical…”^Yeah, the whole “use it or lose it” aspect of budgets is a wonder in itself to consider, to say the least… if only families got to operate that way…. and the whole thing can be so funny, that it’s really sad!….
