Love Luann’s sly inclusion of Tiff as just another student to be counselled.

The public library has no funds, but the school can hire 2 “afternoon assistants” (whatever those are) for just 48 students. It must be a private school, with steep tuition. Is Luann sure she’ll fit in?

Maybe will get to see them actually work TOGETHER on this. I have to say that Tiff looks really cute.
night owl about 11 years ago
After school programs need staffing. High School Students are cheep and can be wonderfully mature. Kids respond to them well. A licensed day care would need 12 to 1 ratio. 24 to one is a bit skimpy.
FigwitsMom about 11 years ago
So despite the fact she dresses like a hooker and is a blatant liar, Tiff still gets the job?Yeah, now THERE’S a great role model for kids!
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Yes, but the previous understanding (at least for us) was that there would only be one hired…
sarafaye about 11 years ago
Tiffany is being awfully cute there, but I can’t trust the principal who would put her in charge of children after yesterday’s stunt.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
And it’s not a guarantee to have to split them… for various reasons, they could keep them in the same room…. two groups in one, even using a “partition”. My old middle school had partitions that were like “moving walls”, stronger and more sturdy than a curtain, and retractable…
JayBluE about 11 years ago
That’s how I wonder what got her to the position of applying there, in the first place? Daddy doing some plastic surgery on her card? Or as a means to repay for “Taking it to the limit”? Or something else?….
JayBluE about 11 years ago
I could see that, but when she got her camp acceptance letter, she had it in her hand, and seemed to have read it… – If this would be a thing about Tiffany, then maybe she has trouble with a specific area… if not the reading, maybe the writing, or perhaps a form of dyslexia… a combination somewhere can be possible….
legaleagle48 about 11 years ago
Well, this should be interesting.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Remember that this is an after-school care program, not a classroom… whatever activities they have, it may be possible to have both groups together… it could be split up, but there are reasons to have the classes as close as possible to each other, such as for safety reasons- such as the need for emergency exiting of the school, and also so that all heads can be accounted for, and as close to each other as possible, as there are sure to not be as many people there at that time of day… and also for any activity, such as playing games indoors or out, it can be efficient to have one larger group…
JayBluE about 11 years ago
And that way, Tiff can focus on making sure that all of her accessories and supplies are safely out…
Mikeyj about 11 years ago
Well, that was disappointing, I was looking forward to a classic “Tiff screws over Luann” dust-up, instead we get them working together? (Maybe this is the beginning of the “Why is Tiff such a B-witch” arc, that we’ve been promised)
JayBluE about 11 years ago
And this gives Luann more time to grab her “Quill-o-phone”….
barbarasbrute about 11 years ago
When did Luann interview? I thought she was waiting for that when Tiff announced that there was no one there.
mdcdjg2008 about 11 years ago
most after school programs I have seen are a fee based program. Meaning for parents who cannot pick their children up immediately after school they will pay extra money for them to be watched by the school. So the money will increase as the number of students increase. No wait on government or school board funding.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Or the Borg are using this method to assimilate, and allowing Luann to utilize their trans-warp hub….

JayBluE about 11 years ago
Why is Tiff happy?^Could be because this is one more time that she didn’t have to lose to Luann…
sarafaye about 11 years ago
OK, I’m not pretending to be realistic here, just trying to make peace within myself with Tiffany getting hired. Perhaps Luann interviewed first and was told to wait outside, so Tiffany was being honest about there being no third person waiting, but it still makes sense that Luann was still sitting there.
dadoctah about 11 years ago
Not 47 students; 47 children. Big difference. As one of my high school teachers once pointed out, “I call you pupils because calling you students would imply that you study.”
Sisyphos about 11 years ago
Ohh! They both got hired! Super Duper! Now the real test begins. Can Luann handle 47 children, one of whom is the jealous, insecure, conniving Tiffster?
ajnotales about 11 years ago
Seems like we skipped a day here, but it keeps the story moving I guess…
hmhusvar about 11 years ago
I would suspect he already knew Luann was there and figured Tiffany was joking. OR he recognized that the girl needs some learning and growing.
After schoool program = babysitter. They will other staff. It is daycare at school. So homework, activities, etc. Exhausting. We have already seen Luann demonstrate skills for taking care of children. Tiffany is going to need help or the kids will run roughshod all over her.

Wait, Wait, WAIT. The “Job” was for ONE Teaching Assistant, and they end up Hiring TWO??
What about the OTHER Applicants for the Job? Are They S.O.L?
And WHY is That Bunny Rabbit in the lower left side of panel One, PURPLE???
Boy, THIS “Human Resources” Guy is gonna have a LOT of Questions to ANSWER at the NEXT City Council Meeting.
Dragongourd Premium Member about 11 years ago
Well that’s annoying. Tiff said no one was out there and now Lu has had her interview and been hired. Or did she have no interview? Or did Tiff sit in on her intevuew?
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
I’m also surprised that the principal would hire Tiffany after she lied to him about Luann not being there. Maybe the school’s standards aren’t all that high? Or he’s planning to make a pass at her later.
A “Deus ex Machina” moment quickly fixes that. We don’t know how long Tiff was staring at Lu or when, in the events, she (Tiff) came back in to Big Chin’s office to say, “no one was there.” She (Lu) might not have been there, at that moment. She could have been using the “facilities.”
luann1212 about 11 years ago

TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Awwwww yeeaaaahh! The cat fight is on!!! Not so much about “getting the job,” but “keeping it.” To quote “Flounder,” “This… is gonna be GREAT!”
Some “pre-arc” issues"
1) If Big Chin has, indeed, hired Tiff for “nefarious” purposes, will it be Lu that discovers them? Will she “bust” them, only to have Tiff try to scheme and turn the tables around on Lu to get Lu in trouble? Given their performance in those strips Levi shared with us yesterday, and the current flap over “Drama Camp,” I wouldn’t put it past Tiff to try and eek out some kind of revenge.
2) Is Lincoln where “Shannon” goes to school, and will that be a complicating factor? Hopefully, Shannon will be on Lu’s side.
3) Will they have to work in the same room with the same group of kids? If so, will Tiff (primarily) try to pit the kids against Lu in front of them all, and/or vice versa?
To reiterate my earlier thought, “MEEEOOOOW!”
Terrywoebegone about 11 years ago
Tiff will last all of next week’s story.
Sportymonk about 11 years ago
I think Luann realizes she will be taking care of all 46 (47) and Tiffany will be as useful as a tree stump.

> Tiff is going to be in for a major shock when she gets her first pay check.>Tiffany has held at least two “real” jobs, that pay wages in the usual way: working as a go-fer (excuse me, “production assistant”) on the straight-to-video “Zeye” movie, and then posing as a model for the picture-frame photo. It is possible she didn’t have income tax or Social Security withheld from those if she was considered an independent contractor rather than an employee, but in any case neither one of those was a $1k-per-day job, so she has some idea about the “real” world. Surely the job posting must have explained what the hourly wages would be at Lincoln Elementary, so I doubt that she is in for a shock there.
seismic-2 Premium Member about 11 years ago
> So, that is why Luann isn’t on her phone or laptop – she’s meeting Q in the continuum…>I think you’ve nailed it. Consider the whole scenario here – there’s this “perfect” part-time job that hundreds of students and retirees would kill for, but they get exactly two applicants. It was supposed to be for one position, but the number of kids doubled overnight(!) and so they now hire both candidates. The timeline of Tiffany’s leaning the office (which has its name on the wrong side of the door), Luann’s being interviewed, and their both being hired, has a temporal discontinuity. Clearly the only explanation for this whole ridiculous “plot” (to use the term loosely) line is that it is one of those change-reality games that Q used to play on Jean-Luc, or maybe some game that Greg and Karen cooked up in the Holodeck.

“It’s just a show, we should really just relax…”
live2read about 11 years ago
This can’t be good. Given Luann and Tiffany’s history of fighting over everything, they’ll end up behaving even worse than the kids they’re supposed to be role models for. I mean, they’ll end up trying to outsmart the other in an effort to see who’s “better” with kids.
cubswin2016 about 11 years ago
TIffany won’t last long with all of these kids.

Bernice would say that there are 48 children who need help, two of them more so than the others.

Why exactly does Tiffany want this job? Did Daddy forget to pay his taxes and get his assets frozen by the IRS?

TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
@Mikeyj: Well, that was disappointing, I was looking forward to a classic “Tiff screws over Luann” dust-up…
Yes, that was in the back of my mind, too.
That might still happen! Tiff could be playing a very long game, here. ;-) Bigger consequences for Lu if Tiff can finagle some scenario whereby Lu is “compromised” and involving “children…” Just as Tiff was so compromised on Lu’s account in the locker room.
Doctor11 about 11 years ago
I bet Tiffany will quit after the first five minutes when one of the kids accidentally spills paint on her outfit.
MamaTiger27 about 11 years ago
@howietheduck : if the children are under a certain age, the ratio of teacher to student has to be a certain percentage. Schools normally have that built into the budget, if they think that far ahead, that is.
drewpamon about 11 years ago
I’m calling it Shannon is going to be in the program.
SwimsWithSharks about 11 years ago
I blame Bernice for this. Bernice pretends to be Luann’s friend but really has it in for her — that’s why she sent Tiff on the interview too.
Miles VanDelay about 11 years ago
Thus begins the friendship that will eventually see Lu and Tiff become college roomates.
Suleskarry about 11 years ago
It may be that this is just what Tiffany needs, to work with children. She may find that this is her niche. She responds positively to innocent people, as with Ox, and I think she could actually bloom around children.
Dragoncat about 11 years ago
I’m guessing that Tiff is under pressure from her parents to get a job, since they are fed up with her overspending. The time has finally come for her to understand the importance of working for a living.Besides, can anyone possibly imagine Tiffany, of all people, working at WeenieWorld?
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Look at yesterday’s second panel again. Tiff is looking into the outer office where Luann is sitting. How does she not see her? It’s illogical.
I know Tiff sees Lu in the outer office, “at that moment.” But how many other “moments” pass between the 2nd & 3rd panels, when Tiff sees Lu, and when Tiff is back in Big Chin’s office saying, “no one is there”? For all we know, Tiff could have waited for Lu to get up and go “hit the head,” and then go back to Big chin. Of course, that scenario does have a shelf-life (i.e. it couldn’t take “hours,” etc.), but with “Deus Ex Machina,” much is possible.
Dragoncat about 11 years ago
I believe Tiffany is relieved that a third person didn’t apply for the job.
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Uh, maybe you’ve heard of a wonderful device called an “off” switch? And if that doesn’t work, there’s this thing called “the plug”?
I’m sure that on/off switch works quite well when their parents desire it to. It’s just that whenever I’m over to their house, it’s the only place I ever see them, except at the dinner table. But I also know that their parents get them very involved in sports, music, band, as well as their studies. Maybe it’s just timing, as in whenever I happen to be over there, that’s where I find them. But when they’re on it, nothing can pry them away from that controller. Something about Charlton Heston and “cold, dead hands.”
seismic-2 Premium Member about 11 years ago
But if Tiffany did ask Bernice to find her a job, and Bernice withheld the information about this opening in order to “save” it for Luann, then Bernice ought to be kicked out of the office and never allowed to become a guidance counselor. There are rules against favoritism, and rightly so.
Jadearon about 11 years ago
Tiff likely won’t have the job for long. She’ll do the same thing she did to a little girl at Luann’s library; she start asking the other kid’s ‘Okay, now what’s wrong with (Jane)?’ And the kid will start crying because she just got publicly put-down.
imbaldeagle about 11 years ago
C’mon, this ain’t the real world! It’s like we get a continuous close-up focus on a few Pitts kids. We don’t see all the others, except background shadows. Others were interviewed, but they weren’t selected because Greg would have to introduce a bunch of new characters. And we don’t see all the action, because there’d be the online complaint: “Isn’t this ever gonna end.” You cn gss wht hppnd wtht seng it all.

“My next concern is, can Tiffany read?”-I know you are being semi serious, but really, that is funny.
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
Misdeeds will ensue— but Principal Chin deserves it. He hired an assistant who he knows lies, is inexperienced, and is immature.*At the end of the term, will the kids in each “class” be tested to see who has improved the most? Must have assistant accountability!
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
Luann was good with the kids at the library and enjoyed it. Bet she excels at the school. Do we see her start considering the adult employment of elementary ed? If she wants to “perform”, a teacher has a daily gig!
SwimsWithSharks about 11 years ago
Don’t assume facts that aren’t in evidence. Oh I didn’t know we were prohibited from having a little fun and making some speculations here. I won’t do it again.PS Hey anyone wonder if Brad has a baby before Luann graduates?
locake about 11 years ago
I think the job was for an assistant so the girls will have a boss over them. At least 3 people watching the 46 children. Tiff will hate this kind of work.
sarafaye about 11 years ago
“Look at yesterday’s second panel again. Tiff is looking into the outer office where Luann is sitting. How does she not see her? It’s illogical.”It makes sense if Tiffany is perfectly aware that Luann was the first interview and all candidates were told to wait until interviewing is complete. Then there actually is no one else out there and the writer was having a little fun with our expectations.
lmonteros about 11 years ago
Generally not at a public school. The families may pay something, but not enough to cover the cost of employees and insurance. But this program could be covered by a grant that allows enough money for hiring more workers. Also, there is probably an adult/student ratio state law that would mean they would have to hire a second person or turn away kids.
dblbaraje about 11 years ago
Maybe I missed it, but how did the interviewer discover Luann outside when Tiffany said there was no one there?
ST Joe River about 11 years ago
Kind of a dumb one today. Left a big gap between today and yesterday. What a deal. Maybe Monday will be better.
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
If, by some chance, Shannon does go to that school and is placed in Luann’s group, things will probably be fine. On the other hand, if Shannon winds up in Tiff’s group, perhaps Tiff will retire within a day or two.
One can only hope. ;-PPP

watmiwori about 11 years ago
Right! I for one cannot imagine Tiff consultingBernice, or any counsellor about ANYTHING….
lchap about 11 years ago
How did we get from yesterday, when Tiff is trying to defraud the hiring system in the school and Luann is unwittingly sitting in the hall, to today, when they are all standing in the same room together as if nothing happened??
Asharah about 11 years ago
So what if Bernice told Luann about the job and not Tiffany? Luann mentioned she liked working with children. The job is ideal for her interests. If Tiffany came in and asked Bernice about a job, Bernice could have looked to see if there was a high-priced boutique or cosmetics store looking for a salesgirl. That would be right up Tiffany’s alley. Especially if she got an employee discount on the merchandise.
