Miss Phelps has lied to herself so many times that she now believes it is the truth.

Aaah, Good ol’ “M.O.M”. (Method Of Madness)!… Mrs. Phelps is an “accidental counselor”, and Bern is getting the advice she sought, but in the usually unexpected way… It’s funny how Bern is Jello, and Phelps is the “brick wall”, here.. – The reassurance phase is proceeding… more than just about what is “sensible”…. the re-estimation of what one has, when viewed from an alternative, perhaps more independent source… the resolution that one’s own flora maintains an ample, if not merely adequate supply of chorophyl type compounds and vert-like, reflective light that in hindsight would prove just as lush, vivid productive and teeming with aesthetic appeal, even if compared to adjacent areas of privately cared-for flora and earthly growths… – In other words, the grass is not always greener on the other side … Our grass (for the most part) is just fine! ….

A lie, repeated often enough and loudly enough, becomes the truth. That’s how politics works. It’s also how unwise counselors work…

Ms. Phelps isn’t lying, nor is she pretending… – She’s so comfortable, so used to “not being what others expect her to be”… She’s honest and unpretentious, to the point that she is regarded as unaware…. – But her going through life is the same at moving to the rhythm of a different drummer… people would think that the beat is off… but if you listen closely, you’d see that the beat is “just fine!”…. it’s just not the same style as others, but it serves her just fine… – It’s like she’s trying to express to Bernice, when you have your own mind, you will be comfortable with who you are, and will not depend on the “general consensus”, but will be your own person…..
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
And don’t forget that at the outset of the arc, Bernice was questioning whether or not she was missing something, when shopping with Delta… she’s getting an answer, now.… that she has a good mind of her own … – The prom is just a “secondary aspect”, a “vehicle” in the development of Bernice, just as there was development of Gunther a bit in the previous arc, among others…

I’ve seen it happen that the Delta-type, with solid thinking, winds up married, and the Bernice-type (who would like to marry) goes on to save the world.
Hank1938 almost 11 years ago
Bernice? Go to the prom.

Mrs. Phelps, you are a sad, naive, poor shell of an old woman who chose not to explore or live her life and honestly feel sorry for whomever you try to get to follow down your sad doldrum excuse of a life experience….get out of there Bernice and try to have some fun! (Get Delta off her serious/blind to fun @$$ and go stag to the prom and have FUN!)
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
Bernice Halper! Do you want to become another Miss Phelps, or do you want to have some fun while you are still young?Think carefully before answering….

Phelps enjoys her “sensible” life, just as Delta enjoys hers. They take pride in being who they are, even though (or maybe precisely because!) it lets them feel smug and superior. It’s wrong to dismiss them as miserable people for choosing the path in life that they believed to be appropriate. They are comfortable in their own skins (and firm spines).

I dunno where Ms. Phelps is going with this. Is she trying to recruit Bern so she can get “outta there?”
I really hope Bern latches onto the “Epiphany” here. Of course, if Bern does go to the prom, it will be a defeat of sorts since Ms. Phelps will be there chaperoning. Might make for some “interesting exchanges” between them, both then, and in the future. :)

Bernice? Never, Ever, EVER, Trust ANYBODY With an “Agenda”. That Goes for Delta. That Goes for Phelps.
You’re One of the SMARTEST Kids in the School. Did You FORGET to THINK for Yourself? Has “Doing what You WANT to Do” Suddenly Become “Politically Incorrect”?
Do You Wanna end up Like Phelps who by the way makes a LOW Five Figure Salary, Works a THANKLESS Job, and Spends the Lion Share of Her Free Time Posting Hateful, Obnoxious, but Thought Provoking Posts to a Comic Strip Forum???

Prediction: Bernice is going to admit at she wants to go to the dance, and Ms. Phelps is going to admit that she wished she had gone as a teen. Either that, or they will have a falling out.
Fly On The Wall almost 11 years ago
I think if more young people followed Ms. Phelps lead, our country wouldn’t be in the state it is in today. The comments on here just prove that irresponsible behavior is what we as a nation strive for first.

Don’t really think that counselor is wrong. But there’s a line in a song somewhere about “putting middle-age thoughts in the heads of children”. Seems to me that there;s a time to be youthful, a time to be middle-aged, and a time to be old. And perhaps your actions should reflect the phase of life you’re in.

So how come all the older ladies kept trying to get me married off back when I was single?I’m convinced they meant well. They actually scared me off for several years by thefact that they spent the rest of their time describing to each other their husbands’failings — in great detail.
ACTIVIST1234 almost 11 years ago
Isn’t this the exact OPPOSITE of the advice the G-man’s friends were giving him?*Is it better to follow advice that makes us more like we already are (listening to Ms Phelps) or advice that expands the way we are (Quill— roll down the hill)?
ACTIVIST1234 almost 11 years ago
Remember, Bern, you wanted an internship with Ms. Phelps so you could learn how NOT to be like her!

Team Evans is not cruel enough to leave Bernice to a fate like this. A new boy character is in the wings.

Reading all these comments make me want to turn back the clock to the early 1970s when Earth Day dances replaced teens’ interests in proms and go to the prom!
`
The Senior Ball? I graduated midterm, was in college already and still feel I missed nothing.
`The Senior Trip? Yes, I went. The guy sitting in front of me pretended he was having a nervous breakdown all the way from northern California to Disneyland, and a girl catty-corner to me pretended to laugh at him all the way there and all the way back. Meanwhile I kept asking myself why I bothered to come along.`Bernice, go to the prom, graduate, leave the school without turning around to look back, and especially do not look back at Miss Phelps.

For all you fun loving people there are many “boring” people on this earth too. They are the ones who quietly take care of details and keep things in order while those who crave more excitement go off and do amazing things. We need both types.Think of the fabled ants and that poor grasshopper. In the original story the fun-loving grasshopper dies while the boring ants survive. In my own version the ants take the grasshopper in during the cold dreary winter and he keeps the ants entertained with his fiddle. An aside, we may see Ms Phelps and Mr. Fogarty dancing together at the Prom – that’s my guess.

It’s just like I said the other day—Greg Evans is recycling an ancient, outdated stereotype that should have gone out with the horse and buggy and old-fashioned telephone.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-Huh?
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
- Bernice needs to make her own decisions on what she wants not someone else’s-This has been the point of a whole lot of these arcs, going all the way back to the debates between Toni and Brad about how they will be after marriage. That is what is going on; our characters are trying to figure out what their next steps in life will be, and some of that involves listening to other people’s recommendations to decide if they work for that character or not…
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
- To each their own. It’s up to you to find out what makes you happy, and ignore what everyone else does.-Excellent comment, thanks for this. In fact, I think this may be Evan’s point with all the emphasis in recent arcs on what each character will do next. The characters are ‘trying on’ particular characteristics to see if they fit. Bernice is ‘trying on’ the altruistic, sensible approach right now, and maybe not finding that it fits all the time…
doverdan almost 11 years ago
I predict that Les (after many turn downs by others) will invite Bernice to the Prom. .She will first refuse, but after gnashing of teeth about being sensible, she will later accept. .She will make a deal with him — no nonsense. He will keep it, more or less. ’All Bernice’s friends will violently oppose this. She will enjoy being reckless.

Phelps seems happy with her life, that is all that matters. It would not be the right life for Bernice or most people. Every person needs to find the right lifestyle for them to live. No one else can tell Phelps that the life she is living is not “right”.

I totally think that Mrs. Phelps is trying to get her to go to prom by scaring her. Mrs. Phelps probably didn’t go to hers for other reasons, but regretted it, and is now making herself seem more like Bernice. Despite popular belief, I don’t think Mrs. Phelps is as dumb as she seems.
I also think not going to prom because you weren’t asked is stupid. You don’t go to prom because you’re asked, you go to prom because it’s a celebration of your graduation! I watched WAY to many girls go to prom with guys they barely even knew or liked, just so they had SOMEONE to go with, and than they had a lousy time that they could have just spent with their friends instead :/

I, personally, follow a Higher Calling; rather than the general population. I find that I’m a lot better off that way. For instance: no marriage, no kids, no mortgage, no car, no loans; it all adds up to more money in my pocket for things that I’d much rather have; such as money set aside for a rainy day.

“Does Bernice want to be MISS Halper when she gets to that age?”
Who knows? I used to work with two really neat older (read 10-15 years older than me) single women who had a lifestyle they enjoyed…and they weren’t stuffed-shirts about it. Eventually one of the women married and the other didn’t. Didn’t change their attitude about life and how fun it can be, however… ;)

“And if you want to share it (your good life)with your cats, that’s a good life for anyone, not just rigid loser old maids.”
I used to have two cats, but they went to the Bridge awhile back (I haven’t replaced them because I was always cleaning their box and got tired of it) and I’m happily married. Also, describing single women of a certain age as being rigid, looser old maids is soooo 19th century…get your head out of your (insert the proper word here)…and celebrate every one without being derogatory about their status in life… ;)

Re: cats and breathing…that’s why I never replaced my two cats…especially because of the litter dust… ;)

Bernice needs to tell miss phelps she’s more interested in exploring life, not becoming an up tight spinster with no clue.

Clever Miss Phelps. She is counselling Bernice to go to the Prom, but she is also making it Bernice’s own decision. And Bernice doesn’t realise this at all!
