Well, since Sunday was the day this arc started, and also because it doesn’t have to follow into a new arc, maybe tomorrow will have a nice “wrap-up” to this, and then something else new on Monday….

Yeah, but he got tenure (making him bulletproof from firing) and he’ll have a nice pension with bennies waiting for him. There are worse things in life to be than a teacher and I doubt that any of us who went through public school never had teachers who were obviously going through the motions and counting down the days to their own three-month summer break. I had some really great teachers who made a difference in my life, but their were in the minority. Most were like Fogarty…it was their JOB and little else.

Better ending than the one for my woodshop teacher, Mr. Palmer. This happened over 50 years ago but can never be forgotten. He was a mean, nasty, teacher who hated teaching and was hated by all his students who he would hit with a wooden board and who generally epitomized the term “bad attitude.” We all dreaded his class and one morning the metal shop teacher came into class to announce that Mr. Palmer had died in a car crash on the way to school and spontaneous applause and cheering broke out. What a terrible thing to see or be part of of, but there it was and can never be changed. Really sad.

“He should have made the last positive impression: He should given his littel speach, and dismissed them before the bell rang. "*Sisterdame – you are SO right! He could have given them a gift in return. *Yet, everyone’s lingering reflections should be positive. Mr. Fogarty got to do the work he trained for and was not so unhappy as to get a different one (as some of the teachers in my family did). He got paid well and could have had a wife & family, if he had so chosen. He do doubt has money saved.*And the kids he taught got into fine lives after graduation— Yale, Howard, Muny, community college, or jobs.*It’s a win-win, Mr. F. Now go and do what you dreamed of and neglected! With a little initiative on your part, life will only get better!

He has got to learn better time management skills. All classrooms must have a clock on the wall, he must know when the class ends. Why is he always talking when he knows the bell will ring??

This whole Fogarty thing is starting to get depressing. Maybe because it is a holiday weekend, the comments are very few, or maybe people are starting to lose interest.

“I always thought you never paid any attention to me…and I was right.” Sad commentary to me, as a teacher. What will students say to me? This storyline, while boring to some has had a special place in Greg Evans’ heart. I wonder if he used to teach or was close to someone that did? Thanks to all the Mr. Fogartys out there.

His problem is, and always has been, bad timing.

I can see it, the thoughts exist. This was borrrring and unrewarding, but at least the Evanses didn’t pull an unearned sappy ending out of thin air.

Poor Mr. Fogarty!

Sad but that is his legacy.”.Bile: bitterness: feelings of bitterness and irritability.I’m thinking more along the lines of frustration although there may well be some bitterness. He wanted to change the world by teaching but feels he failed and is unappreciated even for his efforts. .He is sad because he cared and lacked the power to convince the children to pay attention and that what he was trying to teach might and should mean something to them..They don’t hate him or despise him. Many would eventually come to appreciate him. Kids have come up to my wife years later to apologize for their misbehavior and disinterest in school and to thank her for the things she managed to teach them and how it helped them in life. Even from my minor days of substitute teaching, kids who knew me tell others how much I helped them by showing care and willingness to listen even when I disagreed. Others tell me how they wish they had listened when they had the chance.

.Fogarty isn’t a failure even though he feels like one. Besides, now he can go into some other field of endeavour.

Haha, he was a bad teacher who hated his job, and he made no impact on his students! Is Batiuk ghost-writing this week? Because this id depressing stuff.

That was like our drama teacher. He always gave his goodbye speech when it came to his senior classes. We called him ‘Papa Joe’. AND….. We paid attention! lol :)

Much of the problem with the education system is that students are never taught good study habits, but are constantly tested on them.

Another problem is that they are told to skip words that they don’t understand. When that happens, a small part of their attention gets stuck on that word. Their attention is decreased until they space out after reading the same paragraph 5 or 6 times. They can’t quit or stay away from the rotten teaching. A few years of that and their IQs drop quite significantly. They need to carry simple dictionaries and use them.
