I’m still looking for my Miss Right (singular, not plural… Mormons have ceased polygamy in 1890 although nonaffiliated splinter groups still practice).

All of those things Bernice describes are much more likely when you’ve got somebody supportive helping you to fulfill your dreams, and much more fun with somebody you love. Where do people get the idea that your life ends with marriage? It opened up a whole world of new possibilities for me!

Kind of funny that Luann Againn is also looking at possible futures, this future after high school. Nothing like what Bernice and Luann are discussing…

#1- learn what marriage is all about.

@Mordy/Moose: I don’t think Luann was being snarky. I think she was just making an observation, given that Bernice has lately been obsessed with a mysterious guy who doesn’t seem to return her affection…

Well, Bernice – by the time you accomplish all of that, you should be close to 90 years old, and nothing turns a guy on like an 90 year – old in a walker.

OOO. Role reversal. Bernice with all the idealistic goals and aspirations and Luann with the snarky come-back. Just like how Bernice dominates the strip named after Luann.

I just love Greg’s artwork, like myself, he keeps it simple, yet complex, in the way he gets so much, from a few well-placed lines.

Every thing she mentioned can be done while a person is married. What she really needs to do before she gets married is grow up and learn how to deal with people better.

Bern should have taken French in high school & there is not many blimps around anymore to ride in if any unless you pilot one for Goodyear!

Not to mention you’re only, what, 18 Bernice??? Give it 10 years!

Actually I think this panel falls within the overarching nature of Greg’s Sunday strips. I mean they either talk about the foibles of life, or something generalized that is not necessarily related to the arc or arcs that is happening on the other six days of the week. I think it relates really more to the issue that young women face in terms of getting an education, trying to have a life independent of the usual norms of marriage, family, and normal, sexist based ideas of what women should do (this would not even be an issue with a young man for example) and ‘trying to find a guy who wants to marry you"? Would that question even come up with a 19 or 20 year old dude? Do women have to be affirmed by their marriage eligibility, or can that be separate or part of an overall life plan? This panel provides so many aspects to gender position that it could be a basis for a Master’s thesis easily. Sorry to be so serious, but there it is; although Bernice and Luann’s life travels as young women who are so besotted with young men is a major theme of the strip generally. So I guess an argument can be made that there is a relationship.

Sounds a lot like a girl I liked in my yoot. She had all these dreams she would talk about til she got knocked up. Funny how lfe changes your plans.

Like get a boyfriend. Like get a life.

Luann is right, and you are doomed if you don’t change your rigid, OCD ways, Bernice!

Bernice will be fine with a little maturing. Jeez, she’s only a sophomore in college. That’s still a teenager. And for the record, I did all those things before getting married. I’ve done even more since I got married, but that’s each person’s journey. The most important thing is that Bernice recognized she is not ready for such a serious commitment.

I think that Luann is posing a very literal statement to Bernice: What does she HAVE to do before getting married? Of course she’d have to find a guy willing to marry her! Duh!!!!

Ten (of our) years from now, Lu & Bern will still be hanging out in Lu’s bedroom, talking about things they want to do. Maybe the Evanses will have let them out of college by then, maybe not.

Does it seem like the tables are turned? Usually Luann is wide eyed and eager about something and Bernice is the one to make sarcastic remarks.

Oh, that’s right Luann! thanks. almost forgot that one detail. got everything else for my wedding already, though.
