It became a state on August 21, 1959, not long after Alaska. (Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959. I can just barely remember when the U.S. flag had 49 stars on it.) It took a while for Hawaii to become a state because plantation owners didn’t want statehood. It wasn’t until 1954 when descendants of workers broke the power of the plantation owners that Hawaii was able to move toward statehood.

Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania, the only U.S. state located outside North America, and the only one composed entirely of islands. And also the only one that was a kingdom before it was a republic, a republic before it was a territory and a territory before it was a state. Queen Liliʻuokalani was the last monarch of Hawaiʻi.
