    No, ghostkeeper has it right. According to wikipedia, it is an allusion to the ear-shaped handles common on pitchers used for serving liquids. It is something that adults would say as a coded reminder to be careful about what one says in front of children.

    Yes, they do. My then three-year-old nephew came upstairs into his living room, where I was visiting my sister, spewing a torrent that made him sound like a longshoreman. “Where did you learn to talk like that?” my sister asked incredulously. Right on cue, my brother-in-law came around the corner with a buddy of his spewing like a longshoreman. If my sister caught the connection, she didn’t say anything while I was there. Didn’t even react. And I’d know her husband as long as she had; he grew up just up the street from where my sister and I grew up.
