I can’t really understand your first two paragraphs…. but as for “How are straight people with gay relatives and friends supposed to talk about gay culture with gays?”
How about talking to them the same way you talk to anybody else, without trying to focus special attention on the fact that they’re gay?And …um…. maybe don’t tell them “Don’t be so “Gay”,” OK?
The new girl was not making Homophobic comments she was making stereotypical comments about gays that really weren’t offensive. Get over you self is what the HR rep is saying.
Maybe because I’m not homosexual; but I didn’t think her comments were all that offensive. Stereotypical, yes; but not that offensive. OTOH, you can’t convey a lot of subtext in a cartoon; but she didn’t seem to be degrading, sneering, vindictive, or anything else while she was being stereotypical. Probably doesn’t even realize she’s being stereotypical.

There should be a word that’s not as strong as homophobic, but halfway there: homopatronizing? homocondescension?

Which is why you should take it seriously.

When did stereotypical comments become status quo and acceptable? If they are then that’s where the problem lies.
