So true. It’s a weapon, which takes time to recharge, so they don’t release that “stink” unless they feel severely threatened… and they give a sequence of “warnings”, first. (But if a skunk stands on its front feet with its hind feet and tail in the air… run!)
Skunks can be very nice animals if they don’t feel threatened. I’ve led a friend past a wild skunk — within two feet — on my porch without it even turning its head. And once, a mother (wild) skunk let me pet her baby while she watched.
