Worst cancellation story: Montreal airport, at the gate we were told the flight was cancelled, then the agent vanished. We discovered only locked doors on the path we had taken, and finally had to pile up furniture to climb an eight foot wall. True story.
I was on a flight decades ago, headed to Florida in January. Plane was delayed over an hour for de-icing….they turned off the ventilation system and it was getting hot and I felt claustrophobic ……OY
Our recent American Airlines flight from Portland to Charlotte was delayed enough to miss our 7:30 AM connecting flight to Greensboro, NC. The agent at the desk in Portland told us that we could get a flight out a 9:00 PM that night.
We asked, it’s a hour 30 drive. How about a voucher for a car. “Sorry, that’s NOT American Airline policy. After all, a 13 and a half hour layover after an all-night flight is perfectly reasonable.”
As it was, the pilot took a left turn in the Bermuda Triangle and we did have enough time to make the connecting flight. I canceled the car rented at my expense when I was reasonably sure I wasn’t going to get bumped for cargo.
My wife and I were flying to the UK (YYZ to Stanstead) and had a 72 hour delayed departure (which included an unscheduled 24 hour layover in Mirabel). Thank you Nightmare (Nation) Air.
I’ve never complained about delays because the way I see it I’m flying in the air while sitting down and I’m not driving. My first flight was on a Constellation, so I’ve been doing this for a long time.
Some stories are harder to believe than others. I was in the airport terminal in Santa Barbara, talking with a well-traveled friend, as we waited for her departing flight to be called. She told me how she had missed flights in London, Paris and New York. She talked through two flight announcements … and missed her flight.

I was once on a flight from DC to Seattle that was delayed until they could find a crying baby to put on board. I think it’s an FAA requirement.

I usually fly Alaska and ever have any delays unless it’s weather related and all flights are delayed
