In the flashback it seems Nancy is having all the fun working with a nut and a wrench and turning it into a robot car. The girl in the yellow can turn a wrench into a pencil, and a green box into a sheet of paper, but it doesn’t look on her face that that is fun. So, I don’t really get what the artist was thinking here.
Esther really was happier with Nancy around. You can tell because her brow is slightly more wrinkled in the first panel… Oh, wait, no. There’s just a bit of dirt on my monitor. Never mind.
