You get West Nile virus by a mosquito bite on the outside of your body.

I had West Nile once- was not fun but actually had to drive to Radio Shack for a 7 outlet power strip ( I was sans makeup and wearin a caftan (very embarrassing- but too sick to make more effort). I had a fever of just over 101 for 5-6 days.
