madKanga, I think the point of Danae’s argument is that “social retards” are the people who never spend time around other people - just formulas and machines. Whatever evil political parties and churches might or might not do, they are all about spending time with other people.

Well, I enjoyed this comic and how it poked fun at the people who control our daily life (all those cabals of the socially inept), even if a few of the overly sensitive readers didn’t. I really find it hard to take anyone who gets so worked up about a word seriously, especially when the reference is not actually directly relating to what they are sensitive about.

And before anyone gets huffy, I do support the special olympics and all the work that goes into it. I often help my cousin practice for the swim races she competes in, so no blasting about how I don’t understand please.

There is an enormous difference between “socially retarded” and “mentally retarded”. The former has absolutely nothing to do with the latter. I don’t know how that couldn’t be understood when you read the entire cartoon in context. There is nothing wrong or offensive in the word, “retard”. When it, or any other word for that matter, becomes offensive is how it’s used and the intent in which it is used. Trying to equate this cartoon with the special olympics is, at best, disingenuous.

No cartoonist would ever produce a cartoon that ridicules the mentally handicapped, nor would any syndicate distribute such a cartoon. You have simply zeroed in one word and have taken it out of context. I understand the sensitivity to it, but one still needs to keep it in context with cartoon and the character.

The word “retard” as a verb is fine – ask any musician. The word “retard” as a noun is a bit jolting, though. It’s one of those words that is generally not accepted, so it’s surprising to see it used here - especially a couple days in a row.

I wish The Economist had searchable access to their “Letters to the Editor”. I remember one, must have been back around 1995 or 1996. It was crammed full of words, such as “chink” and the one that started this controversy, which are perfectly fine in one context but offensive in another. You can probably imagine some of the words for yourself.

I wonder how many of you people that are flaming would act if you had relatives with special needs? … Thanks for proving how morally and mentally bankrupt you are – nothappy

So you are saying those who make fun of people with special needs, deficient in some physical or mental way, are mentally … bankrupt? “Bankrupt” as in “deficient” in some metaphorical type of intellectual or moral “funds”?

I think I see what you’re saying, and I must say, I’m nothappy that you’re referring to these crass jokesters in such a politically incorrect way. What if it were your son or daughter that had such an insensitive sense of humor. You wouldn’t like it if someone called them mentally bankrupt, I don’t think. You might just as well call them “stupid”. Sorry, Wil’, I meant to say “the s-word.” Won’t happen again.

Whip out a couple “N” words while you are all at it.

Actually, I did. Nov 17, 2nd page of comments. In response to a post from MatureCanadian, whose son has a low IQ and is in a wheelchair, and despises PC euphemisms. My response gives a link to a famous Lenny Bruce bit teeming with n-words, k-words, s-words, b-words, m-words, every letter of the alphabet Very Bad Words, as performed by Dustin Hoffman in the movie Lenny. MCanadian is a big fan of Bruce, and Carlin, and thanked me for the link.

I just thank god Lenny didn’t say stupi- er, the s-word.

The use of the word bleeep in the Nov 17 and 15 strips is extremely offensive to anyone with developmental disabilities or the friends or families of people with developmental disabilities (i.e., mental bleeepation). I am sure the author did not know that and thought that, as some of the commentors do, that “bleeep” has some more acceptable meaning other than the dictionary definition that someone posted earlier. It doesn’t.

I was amazed to see the word used in a comic strip.
