Joe: How'd it go with show and tell? Danae: Well, it was going fine, then it took sort of a bizarre turn. Joe: Oh? What happened? Danae: Miss McGarry showed us how to work the hula hoop. Joe: I don't know whether to laugh or cry... Danae: We ended up doing both.
There are a lot of funny, deep thoughts here. And all of them are as echoes from countless generations past as people see their memories and values become forgotten..It’s my experience that kids in general (up to a certain age – like 25) don’t believe their elders had any life. The World started with what the kids remember. .When I gave my son The Talk, he looked at me in astonishment and said, “Did you and Mom do that?!” Well, kid, I told him — you’re the proof of it..I’ve spent a lifetime accumulating attitudes, opinions, even jokes – only to find that when I share these insights and little pleasures with 20-somethings, I get a blank look. .And for my part: What’s with the tattoos? Oh, now it’s called body art. My uncles had battleship tattoos on their chests, anchors on their arms – that was gross stuff old people did. And young, attractive females cover themselves with it now. To use a texting term – WTF? These attitudes cut both ways, I guess..The last of the WWI veterans recently died. How much longer will those from WWII last? Viet Nam? Desert Storm? New Flash: 100 years from now, Seven Billion People Will Have Died! Well, duh..From the Isaac Watts hymn:.“Time, like an ever rolling stream,Bears all its sons away; They fly, forgotten, as a dreamDies at the opening day.”.Sorry, didn’t mean to be so maudlin. The holidays do it to me.
