The survival of the species was most often due to the skills of gatherers. Hunting was not always productive. If you don’t find berries in one field, you can move on to the next. The energy involved in pursuing and trapping prey that escapes, on the other hand, can leave you too exhausted to start again that day…
Then explain why Cain’s gift of fruit and vegetables was unacceptable to God and Abel’s gift of the sheep was. Your statement is false.actually, leave your bronze age moral stories out of this, if you don’t mind.
If women didn’t spend so much time nagging , men wouldn’t spend so much time hunting. He bagged the beast on the first day but was still gone a whole week.
It is not unusual in academia to call them “gather hunter” societies because if you look at current and recent ones the vast majority of the food is gathered, even when adjusting for Calories consumed. Men and boys have often gathered. Acquiring smaller game, fish, shellfish, kill site prep (as when preparing a route which will take a herd off a cliff) often have involved women. Both genders can be involved in drying, salting, hide prep, etc.
BTW, parsley is a major seasoning and salad veggie. Like lentil soups? Try making them w parsley, a bit of mint, cumin, lemon, etc. Like tabbouli? Parsley is one of its essentials. Stuffing a turkey soon? You will likely be using a heck of a lot of thyme and huge amount of fresh parsley along w the stale bread, onions, butter, celery and whatever else you like in dressings (various combinations using things like sage, chestnuts, cranberries, mushrooms, orange, apple, sausage, clams, etc. depending on location and traditions). Like dipping oil for a good Italian bread? A good oil, parsley, and garlic are the basics. Parsley is one of the most basic of cooking herbs.
Simon_JesterNot necessarily. There is a bowl depicting a woman with a gathering basket on her back, an atlatl danging from her wrist, an antelope kid balanced on top the basket, and a very smug expression on her face. Targets of opportunity favor those prepared. Likewise, no hunter is going to pass up some berries at the peak of ripeness just because he is male.
God wasn’t any more responsible for Cain than he is for me and thee. Little buggaboo called free will. Giving us that meant we would never be mindless robots, but would actually do what was right by choice.
Really? Consider this. The Bible is the holy book of the Hebrews. The Hebrews were, traditionally, nomadic herders. The powerful society into which they supposedly entered servitude was agrarian. Could not the story of Cain and Abel be a way of suggesting that God loves herders more than farmers? Remember whose sacrifice was favored by “God”.
Actually would have been the wife’s responsibility to gather plant materials….men hunt, women gather (tho women also gather small animals when the big game hunt fails).

As I said, not original for me..I first saw that line decades ago on a cartoon of a couple of Eskimos on the beach with a whale.

I frequently eat the parsley, after finishing the meal. It’s a good way to cleanse one’s breath before digging into the dessert.

At one time, my congregation had three females named Anice, Rosemary, and Ginger. They did not appreciate being called the “spice girls”.
