This page opened with just the speech bubbles at the bottom of my screen… and I was trying to make head or tail of it before I scrolled up… I had no chance…
We study history all wrong. We look back at it. we read the end of the book. We know whodunnit. All the spoilers are revealed and we know how things turned out.
Instead we need to build ourselves a virtual time machine and go back and place ourselves IN history and look forward to try to see it as the people who were living it then.
BTW, the Greek-derived word “history” is etymologically related, through Indo-European, to the Latin-derived word “vision”, through a dropped “w” that was replaced with a spontaneous(?) “h”, NOT to the English word “his”.
It’s also not entirely true. “Southern” writers have MUCH more to say about the American Civil War than non-Southern writers. Of course, much of it consists of trying to prove that the Confederacy actually won the war, and that it had nothing to do with slavery

It’s not as funny when you explain it. Give your audience a little credit! :)
