    I think this may have been the inevitable result of things like instant coffee and oatmeal starting to hit the markets big-time in the 1950s. ’Twas a heady time to be an American consumer.

    My grandmother (born in the 19th century) was crazy about instant coffee. To me, it tastes burnt.

    When I was a little guy,5 or 6 years old, and the trolley tracks were being dug up in our town, one of the workers drank water from the faucet on the side of the our house. I was amazed that a person could drink water without a cup. Sheltered life, I guess.
