When one is continuously put-down, you tend not to keep on repeating anything that may put you in a put-down situation again.

My wife’s family are a bunch of wise asses. So she thought she would try that with me. I stopped talking to her. After a while she asked me why. My response was, if the only thing you can say back to me when I speak to you is something derogatory, why even bother? She got the message.
