During the so-called Battle of Bunker Hill, Israel Putnam (some say William Prescott) issued a command: “Do not fire till you see the whites of their eyes!” (WWW so it must be true).
That was almost as good as DJT’s version of American history where he claimed our Colonial army seized the airports from the British right after they finished ramming the ramparts.
And further on in her Washington D.C. history report, ‘during the war of 1812 when the Canadians stormed the capital, you heard them say, "Don’t FIRE, until you can set fire to their White House."
Trump blamed it on the teleprompter. Which means of course, that he admitted he was a President of the United States who was perfectly willing to recite, mindlessly and mechanically, anything that showed up on the teleprompter.
This reminded me of a Richard Lederer piece in which he compiled a series of student bloopers from teachers across the U.S. into a history of the world (you can Google it). It begins:
“The inhabitants of ancient Egypt were called mummies. They lived in the Sarah Dessert and traveled by Camelot. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere, so certain areas of the dessert are cultivated by irritation. The Egyptians built the Pyramids in the shape of a huge triangular cube. The Pyramids are a range of mountains between France and Spain.”
I like Patty’s story of Doctor Washington better than the other story of Gen.Washington. Though I doubt her grade will reflect her level of imagination.
But, when we were younger, we did come up with some pretty outlandish stories to explain what we saw and heard. I can remember hypothesizing that the men who died on all those westerns we watched were really death row inmates. They were given the chance at freedom. If they survived the gunshot, they might get their freedom or at least had their sentence reduced. That story made perfect sense to me.

That was even more ridiculous than an old Bugs Bunny cartoon about American History. Still, even today I’m ROTFL about the tea tacks.
