Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for June 10, 2014
Transcript:
Pastor Porcupine: Pardon me, Rat, but I'm Pastor Porcupine and the church has asked me to punish you for taking cash from the church basket. Rat: Punish me how? Pastor Porcupine: Well, I guess I'd crash into you a few times and stick you with some of these quills, but I really don't want to do that because I think the guilt you feel is punishment enough. Rat: But I don't feel guilty. I need a filter.

He’s stopped feeling guilty? Now that’s more like the rat we all know.

You should feel bad for Rat, Pig. In other words, “Pine, you Pork!”

Pastor Porcupine, the parish enforcer, has put The Fear of God into Rat (yes, I’m ripping off a line from the old Elmer Gantry movie)….

Some churches call it tithing to and for the church, others refer to it as an offering basket to give to the church to help the needy. Those who can afford give and those who need can take, but most usually don’t take. The collected accumulation is then blessed and divided between congregational expenses and placed into the “poor box” for those in need. Somewhere in the church’s evolution (can you use the words church and evolution in the same sentence?) televangelism became a profitable business and glitzy churches with their gaudy extravagance became an accepted norm. Go Figure.

punishment is overrated.

This strip reminds me of the 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls; Sophia, who was the oldest character on the show, said the most outrageous things because her “mental filter” had been destroyed by a stroke.:If you haven’t seen the show, see it — you won’t believe the things that little old lady says!

I wouldn’t assume Rat changed his attitude. It’s quills off a rat’s back for him.

Go back and get the interest from that rat rascal.

Rat deserved that.
But I doubt he’ll learn his lesson. He’s not that type.

Funny how the non-believers seem to feel guilty for not believing – as evidenced by their anti-church comments..

Filter? Looks more like he could use an acupuncturist…

Remember last week when the strip was done differently by a “girl”. I found out the artist name. Bill Watterson aka the creator of Calvin and Hobbes (first time he did a strip in years). I found out because a never before seen artwork he and Pastis did will be on display at heroes con in Charlotte, nc next weekend. (Sadly neither will be there)

Nearly every tax I pay has a portion for subsidizing organized religion’s tax-exempt status. So, we needn’t even go to church in order to be levied a tax!

I’m glad that Pastor Porcupine stated that he’d have to ‘run into’ Rat to stick him with his quills. You’d be amazed how many people still believe the fallacy that porcupines ‘shoot’ their quills!!
