Goat: Hey, Rat, do you want to have dinner with the Smiths and me tonight? They're the ones who just got married. Rat: I can't. I never bought them a wedding gift. Goat: That's okay. Tradition says you have a years after the wedding to get them something. Rat; I know. So if I wait a year and a day, I don't have to get them squat. I'm big on tradition.
Etiquette says gifts are only mandatory at showers (because the purpose is to get gifts). Weddng gifts are not mandatory. I once got a gift for people I didn’t know (friends of the hubby’s, who couldn’t be bothered) after being told it was a small wedding (second for her) and thinking that they wouldn’t get many gifts. It was a HUGE wedding, standing room only, with elaborate gifts piled on a table in the back of the church. After waiting 45 minutes in line to get into the reception, we gave up and went home. So, folks, I am not big on big weddings OR wedding gifts.
