Fun Fact: Utah is the second most religious state in the Union and the only one in the top ten that’s not in the Bible Belt. Also Latter-Day Saints (a.k.a. Mormons) are the most religious people.

Numbers of adherents; times of attendance of meetings, voters responding to pulpit appeals…etc.Measurable, countable behaviors. Praying toward a compass spot several times per day probably counts…

You might be religious if: You spend more than 2 hrs. a day in silent prayer.

You can roughly measure religiosity by intelligence; there is an inverse relationship (yes, really).

I thought you could tell how religious a person was by how actively they hate the competing religions.

I like how the Amish give their kids a year of access to the sins of the real world and then let them decide if they want to be members of the community

The Religeo-Meter reads just about zero for everyone. Let’s just take generic Christianity, including Catholics, Baptists, etc. The essential premise is that there an eternal afterlife with two ultimate options. One is heaven, bliss (although no one explains how you’ll keep from going insane). The other is Hell, unimaginable agony forever. The criteria for drawing Heaven is how well you emulate the behavior of Jesus, whose purpose was to get you clear on the concept.

.I submit that no one actually believes any of this. If they did believe that heaven depends on Christ-like behavior in this brief existence, they would impoverish themselves in dedicating all their goods and works to the poor and unfortunate of the world. If they believed, they would to this even if it wasn’t required, because this life is nothing, and God expressed his intention through Jesus. They simply don’t believe the premise.

    .

Sorry to break in to the religious arguments, but I don’t get the original joke. What is he afraid of Rat saying? Why would it be the word “Wednesday”?

Then, are you saying the Founding Fathers were all idiots? They were all very religious men, and highly intelligent.

@Grainpaw Atheism is a belief system as much as any “religion”. Because it does not center around a fictional being, doesn’t make it any less so a belief system. Yes, you have the right to state your opinion. By the same token, a Christian (Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.) has the right to state theirs. If that is preaching, then so be it. All, including yourself, would then be “guilty” of preaching their belief system, but all would have that right. This is not a US government forum therefore there are no restrictions in that respect.

I’m sorry you suffered any at the hands of any other belief system. I am in flux from a faith aspect, neither Christian nor anything else but also not Atheist. Something between Agnostic and Panentheistic. In part this is because I have seen the damage religion does and in part because rationally and scientifically, “God” makes little sense to me. All that said, I have Christian loved ones that are amazing people and deserving of respect and a voice just as much as you are.

Best to you in the coming year. I hope it brings peaceful times.

As to the strip: meh. Not Pastis’ best. Still amusing, though.
