I like this relationship between Ethan (Phoebe’s dad) and Marigold. They are both antiquarians, and delight in—and consider it important, so that Phoebe will have an historical perspective—to introduce Phoebe to older things. They also enjoy having an “in thing,” feeling cool about being familiar with things that Phoebe and her generation know little or nothing about. Also, they sometimes conspire to embarrass Phoebe (like the time she mentioned—when he was grilling burgers outdoors—how no one else wore his un-cool “dad shorts,” only to see Marigold walk up wearing a pair of them, too [in exchange for him grilling her some oat patties, as she happily admitted when Phoebe asked what he’d offered her to do that]). :-)
