I use an old “Flowbee” hooked to a vacuum cleaner… I’ve saved tons of money from going to a barber and it turns out great !You can’t mess it up because it cuts everything all at one level….Too bad they don’t make them anymore. Don’t know what I would do should it break some day.
I’m a hairstylist… or was… and I’ve cut hair with a dog clipper…. not professionally, but at somebody’s home, for instance.
They’re probably OK for Earl’s hair cos he’s not super fussy…. though if he doesn’t want it all buzzed off, it depends on Opal’s skill.
In fact, they may work better than human hair clippers if his hair is very coarse and wavy, but grey hair usually isn’t.
The difference is dog clippers have slightly wider spaced teeth, and usually a stronger motor, so they can cut through thick, matted coats…
A good one usually costs more than a human one, too…. especially more than those cheap flimsy home hair-cutting sets.
The wider spaces let thicker, wavier, or tangled hair go through…. but don’t keep fine or extra curly hair lined up as straight, so it’s harder to get a precise line unless you’re good at clipping over a fine comb.
Opal probably would need lessons and practice.
Ka7dre…. you’re lucky!
A Flow-bee worked OK for some people…
but I’ve fixed a LOT of horrible messes they’ve made.
Kids and others with soft, fine hair have had it horribly tangled and pulled by them, as well.
They don’t pull evenly on most curly hair, so it looks chewed off by a mad …um… hair chewer….
and even if it works, and does cut all your hair off evenly, most people prefer haircuts that are styled, and not the same length all over….
for instance, for a man, the hair growing from the top of your head is usually cut longer than the hair below, so it all ends up lying together neatly, and the nape is cut way shorter.
Reminds me of the time Winston Churchill had his hair cut by a replacement barber who asked how he wanted his hair cut. Churchill replied: “A man of my limited resources cannot presume to have a hairstyle. Get on and cut it!”
My wife started cutting my hair in 1987 when she had to keep fixing it after I went to the barber. She uses scissors. I bought a nice set of clippers. She used them one time and went back to the scissors. I’ve saved a lot of money in 32 years.
I took a shower at my niece’s once, and when I got to my hair I saw that the only shampoo in the stall was for dogs. What the heck, though: Soap is soap, and it gave body and luster to my pelt.
My wife cuts my hair now and does an excellent job of it and I’ve always been very particular about how my hair is cut.
She paid her way through university by working as a beautician and barber, so I never had any qualms about her competence – but no electric clippers on my hair, just scissors.
I haven’t paid for a hair cut since the early 80’s when Uncle Sam made me. Most of the time growing up my mother would cut it, she’d send me to the barber every so often to “get a pattern”. I cut it myself for a little bit, then my brother in law took over, and now my wife has had the honors for several years.
While I was growing up I always went to the same barber my dad did, and for the same reason. He always finished the haircut with a 60 second neck and shoulder massage with a massaging vibrator strapped to the back of his hand. That felt soooo good. Only 25 cents, too, as I recall.

At least they’re not living on a farm with sheep and she’d be utilizing shearers.

Our dog got clipped yesterday. The only difference is that Opal forgot to put the cone around Earl’s neck.

The $30 clipper set I got years ago from Costco has more than saved me the cost of it.
Or maybe its because I have less and less hair to keep trimmed… ;)

Clippers? Who needs clippers?? A pair of scissors and a bowl were good enough for my dad… they’re good enough for ME…!!

Does Earl, when he goes to the barber, have to pay extra for the haircut with the hole in the middle? How about monks? Pondering points today!

I always thought that people like Earl (and myself) should get half-off the price of a haircut. Where else would you pay full price for half the work?
