The longest I ever held the same job was about a dozen years or a few more. I ‘spect I’d be really tired of doing pretty much the same sort of thing day after day after day, with hard deadlines.
The reason actors who play bad guys tend to be good guys, those who play good guys may be tempted to act bad, and there is no explanation for Jack Nicholson other than that he is very interesting.
My last 5 employers are all gone. Every job ended in liquidation or technology replaced me. I thought I was cursed, but I was gainfully employed for 5 1/2 years at the same place until the virus showed up.
According to Eric Weiner’s “Geography of Bliss”, one reason Iceland has a very high happiness score is they dabble in many different jobs over a lifetime. They don’t see becoming specialists in something as being the highest good, but rather pursuing whatever interests them at any given time. They can do this because failure at something isn’t seen as a stigma. In fact it’s admired if done with the best intentions, such as because they weren’t ruthless enough.
I started out working in the assembly department as a union member, I ended up in management in the engineering department designing Ultra Violet Lighting products and Vacuum systems. and retired after 43 years.
My Top Secret career obliged me not to talk about work at home, but after retirement I’d fall into her (RIP) trap talking about the past. My reply to her admonitions was, “The past is what we are.” Tis a corollary to, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
