Not nice about the hair Earl. That’s something no male child ever wants to hear.

Male baldness actually seems to be more correlated with your mother’s father’s hair than your own father’s hair. So Earl may have it right.

He should tie it to some “habit” of life. I would say that drinking alcohol killed the hair follicles or something like that.

In addition to heridity, baldness can be the result of specific chemical exposure or certain drugs. My late son lost ALL of his body hair (including eye lashes and brows) before he was 35 due to radiation exposure.

They say the gene for baldness passes through the female side of the family so there is hope.

I was told, many years ago, that boys inherit their hair amounts from their mother’s father. It worked for me, but I worry for my son.

Kid, just look at your oldest relative that looked similar to you when he/she was your age. That will be the clue to the hair and more.

We’re back at our 2nd home Mayo Clinic Rochester for yet another surgery for my wife (it was reasonably successful but not ideal), and you see lots of sad cases here. Plenty of chemo bald women – I just saw one such woman whose entire head was tattooed with a tasteful floral design. More power to her!

When hair loss is caused by your genetics, it occurs in a predictable pattern often referred to as male pattern baldness (MPB) or female pattern baldness (FPB).

You may have heard the myth that men inherit the gene for baldness solely from their mother’s father. Even though this isn’t always the case, there is some truth to it.

In reality, the genetic component of male pattern baldness still isn’t well understood, but it’s thought to be polygenic, meaning it involves more than one gene.

Baldness is strongly associate with the AR gene found on the “X” chromosome. A large study looking at 12,806 men of European ancestry found that people with the gene had more than twice the risk of developing MPB than people without it.

However, this isn’t the only gene that determines whether you’ll go bald. A 2017 review found 63 genes that may play a role in male pattern baldness, with only six of them found on the “X” chromosome.

Research has also found that more than 80 percent of people experiencing noticeable balding had a father who also lost their hair.
