Reminds me of when I was teaching my step-grandchildren to draw. One of them was very good but her mother never encouraged her. I’m not saying one should give a child unrealistic expectations about becoming a great artist. However, drawing is a useful skill and also very good as “something to do” in the many waiting periods one encounters in life.

Earl could cover up the black lines that Nelson uses as the outline of the picture.

Having something to do is nice when you’re retired, and not always easy to arrange.

He could always draw a polar bear in a snowstorm.

My white crayons were never really white: they always had specs of other colors stuck to them. Damn those white crayons.

Is Nelson’s behavior what is called passive aggressive?

White Crayon does not leave a mess around your mouth… Wise Kid. Don’t want Grandpa to get in trouble chewing.
