In my day I had to walk across the room over a shag carpet to turn the knob to change the tv channel, and…..AND, adjust the rabbit ear antennas! Oh, the humanity!

As a member of Gen X, I realized a long time ago that most “Back in my days we didn’t have… and we had to make our own fun!” is often nothing but jealousy. I knew if I had all the nice things my kids have now when I was their age, or what kids have nowadays, I would be just like them.

I would have guessed Earl would be more interested in playing Wheel of Misfortune instead of Jeopardy.

Over the period of time, I got to see the dramatic advances in technology. When I was in Jr. High, we thought a slide rule was cool until a hand held calculator came along. When I first joined the Navy, I was trained on how to operate a teletype machine for communications. Just before I retired, The Internet and affordable personal computers came into being. Because I caught the “computer bug” in the mid eighties while still in the Navy, I started to learn computer programming, some of it by necessity when dealing with MS-DOS. I even created an executable program (app) on my last ship with a “C” program object code and MS-DOS ASC2BIN command to make it easier for my people to do their job.

We had to spend hours wasting time with only a ball and jacks, or marbels! Ok, occasionally we would kick a can around or bat at balls with a stick.

Me too … pumping gasoline, washing cars, learning how to chamois them properly, selling bait minnows, climbing TV antenna masts, learning how to repair auto generators, and set engine timing after replacing points, renting utility trailers before U-haul was created, building and installing Ron-Del folding aluminum awnings, selling and installing aluminum storm windows and doors … dating, marrying, graduating and moving to start work at Bell Telephone Labs.

Not really a complaint, more an acknowledgement of jealousy.
