Back in the day, I used to take the Late and Unlamented’s (my first husband) Wilkinson blades out of his razor, replace them with a new one, and use the old ones to shave my legs. One morning he came out of the bathroom holding his razor and remarked how long the blades lasted. “I’ve had this one in there for a month, and it’s still sharp.”
Of course, he was totally mystified when the packet was empty, but just like Sergent Schultz, “I knew nothing”.
A few years ago I found a hard, but not too hard, rubber razor stand that doubles as a sharpening block. If you look at the edge of any blade through a microscope you’ll see something that looks like saw teeth. After a time these teeth get out of alignment. Re-aligning those teeth sharpens the blade. I have used the same blade cartridge since January 1 with re-aligning/sharpening after every shave.
Well, if it is a small enough sign of blood you might brave another morning… or two. That little bump or zit needed to go anyway. Then there’s the clean and ‘sharpen’ on an old pair of jeans trick. But I am NOT implying endorsement.
Far be it from me to disagree with the brilliant minds who write this comic, but in my experience, I tend to draw blood when I use a new, sharp blade. Not when the blade is old and dull. In other words, I change blades and THEN have the first sign of blood.

Most of these new blades aren’t sharp enough to cut you,

I never have this problem. The last time I shaved my face was August 1989. Now I have to shave the “Old Man” ear hair!

Once those blades taste blood, they keep cutting you to get more.

Don’t have that problem with an electric razor. Have a cordless one for camping.

I dislike breaking in a new blade, but really dislike a dull, snagging one.

True that.

The only “blood sport” most pluggers play.

Like I tell my wife, the sign that I’ve done a good job doing a project of some kind is that I bleed a little.

I used to do that, but the older I get, the more I care for comfort over stinginess, so I replace blades now when they first start feeling rough

And if I’m being really cheap . . . three spots of blood before the blade swap.
