Mrprongs: What you’ve left out is the fact that Americans had to spend about four decades under a justified fear of sudden nuclear annihilation. As much as I admired the achievements of the American moon program, I don’t think that price was worth it just for some moon rocks.
Also, the Russians, unlike our current enemies, at least did not worship death, so our own nuclear deterrent could actually deter. Do you think Ahmadina-nutjob or Osama bin Laden care about getting blown to paradise?
