I’m not going to search out the exact density/ specific gravity, but “gallon” is volume not weight. No, I had to check. Butane is 60% the weight of water. In other words, It’s to do with density. A denser subject has more mass in a smaller volume, and thus is heavier.Water’s density is 1g/cm3, butane’s is 0.573g/cm3.Therefore, butane is a lighter fluid.

It’s actually an accurate statement, though! A gallon of gasoline weighs a bit over 6 pounds, while a gallon of butane only weighs about 5 pounds. (A gallon of water is about 8.3 pounds, for reference.)
