I remember an experiment on TV, maybe even Candid Camera, in New York City. They put out different sums of money (coins) on the sidewalk to see how much it took for people to pick it up. I think the threshold then was something like 35 cents.
There’s the story of how rich Bill Gates is, his time being too valuable to pick up a penny. In 2014 Neil deGrasse Tyson analyzed it would have to be $45K before it would be worth Bill’s effort.
A penny on the ground isn’t dirtier than a quarter on the ground. Both are worth picking up. One year, at our winter home, on our morning walk, I found three quarters and two dimes grouped together just waiting for me. Then about six weeks later, at our northern home, I found, again, three quarters and two dimes. TOO WEIRD!
If it takes you five seconds to bend down and pick up a penny, you’re earning $7.20 an hour, which is less than minimum wage, and won’t even pay your chiropractor bills.

At least pick it up and check the date. It could be an 1891 or an Indian head penny.

I didn’t get rich by leaving pennies on the ground.
As a matter of fact, I didn’t get rich at all…

I have a friend that is very wealthy. He always said he would always pick up change off the ground. He said it was 100% tax free.

If you don’t pick up pennies (and nickels and dimes and quarters),
… how can you ever make any cents?

Pick the penny up kid. As my Saint of a grandmother used to say, “If you mind the pennies the dollars will mind themselves.”

I went with the saying “See a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck”. My mother said you shouldn’t pick it up unless it was heads up.
