That’s right, the Pilgrim Fathers came from England not France hence the fact that part of the northeastern US is known as New England. They sailed from Plymouth and so they called the place where they landed Plymouth Rock.
Other parts of the eastern US where originally colonised by French settlers. These include North and South Carolina. I understand that Kansas and Arkansas are pronounced differently because one uses the English pronounciation and the other uses the French pronounciation.
